Scotland & Ireland

The Scottish and Irish Heritage

The ancestry of many families of Macartney (McCartney) in the United States of America originated from Ulster, Ireland, and Scotland with the origin of the name being traced almost some 800 years ago.   The McCartney’s are a branch of the great family of McCarthy Mor of Munster, who were Kings of Cork and Princes of Desmond. The fifth son of Cormac Fionn d.1248 was Donogh Cartnach who is the ancestor of the McCartney’s. Donough Cartnach left 2 sons, the eldest Donal joined Edward Bruce (King of Ireland), {brother of Robert the Bruce (King of Scotland)}. For serving under Robert the Bruce’s standard, Donal received a grant of land in Argylleshire, called ‘Glen Artney’ (Grid 56.22 degrees North 4.0 degrees West) from the King of Scotland. Some of Donal’s descendants later moved to Galloway and settled in Auchinleck in Kircudbright, Scotland.  – by John F. McCartney, “The Surname Macartney or McCartney”

The McCartney clan of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY follows:

Thomas McCartney was born in Northern Ireland sometime in 1865.  At some point in his life Thomas moved to Scotland where he met Catherine Morrow. Catherine Morrow although herself born in Scotland in 1877, her parents were also born and from Northern Ireland.  Thomas and Catherine were married in Scotland in 1902 where Catherine would give birth to Mary in 1903, John in 1904, and Thomas in 1908.

In 1926, John and his sister Mary emigrated to the United States (U.S.).  John was 21 years old and Mary 22.  A year later in 1927, their mother, Catherine emigrated to the U.S. as well.  They lived on Gelston Avenue in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, NY paying $50 per month rent. As first generation immigrants, they did not even own a radio in 1930 (3 and 4 years since coming to the U.S.). John was a sign painter, Mary a dress maker, and Catherine unemployed.  They chose to come to the U.S. with not much wealth if any to speak of, but only to seek a better life for themselves and a better future for their own children possibly one day.  For unknown reasons at this time, their father Thomas McCartney, who lived until 1960, never joined them.

While living on Gelston Ave. in Bay Ridge Brooklyn, NY in the late 1920s and 1930s, Catherine, John, and Mary are the only “Scots” living on the Gleston Ave. block in their neighborhood; most neighbors are second generation New Yorkers or other European immigrants as well.

Sometime in the 1930s John McCartney would meet and marry Eileen Crilly, who was living in the Bronx, NY at that time.  Eileen was also a first generation immigrant herself to the U.S., who emigrated from Ireland.  Eileen was born in Dublin, Ireland on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1910. According to government documents, Eileen’s parents were Patrick Crilly and Catherine Sherlock and Eileen herself was actually born with the name Christine; however, the children of Eileen state her real parents were Francis Crilly and Catherine McGuinness and that Eileen herself was born with the name Ellen. For unclear reasons, it is believed Eileen entered the U.S. under her cousin’s name Christine, and for that reason, when Eileen would fill out U.S. government documents she would use the name Christine and Christine’s parents (Uncle and Aunt) names as her own parents.

John and Eileen McCartney would go on to have six children of their own, raising them all in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, NY as well.  By 2004, on the 100th anniversary of John McCartney’s birth year, their descendants have spread across the U.S. throughout New York, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, South Carolina, Atlanta, and Hawaii.
